The macula concentrate dietary lutein, and convert some of it into zeaxanthin, another protective pigment. These compounds are carotenoids, the same pigment class as beta-carotene, and they absorb harmful blue light, especially sunlight. Similarly, cataracts are caused by sun damage to the lens proteins in the eyes. The lens can accumulate lutein to prevent cataracts and it has been found that when there is a high level of lutein in the macula, there is a reduced incidence of cataracts.

SuperVision Eye Formula with Lutein is a dietary supplement with lutein and other plant extracts known to benefit the eyes. It contains bilberry extract as well as anthocyanidins, rutin, and quercetin.
